Epilobium parviflorum, better known as “small-flowered willow herb” belongs to the Onagracerae family and is found in Central and Eastern Europe and some areas of North America. The small flower willow herb, as the name suggests is a small but very powerful baby pink-colored quadra-petaled flower that has been used as remedies in folk medicine, particularly in Central Europe, for the treatment of prostate disorders and abnormal growths. Until recent years there were no studies to back the tall claims (pertaining to the medicinal properties of the plant) exuded out of years of folk medicine practice, but now we have enough hard facts to believe that the small flowered willow herb is “manna” for the prostate.
The active ingredients present in the willow herb are not only good for the prostate, but also have a significant role to play in blood purification, boosting the lymphatic system and boosting the body’s overall immune response. The small flowered willow herb contains flavonoids, especially derivatives of kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin. In E. parviflorum and E. angustifolium, b-sitosterol, various esters of sitosterol, and sitosterol glucoside. Gallic-acid derivatives may be present.
The prostate is one of the most vulnerable glands of the male body and most men above 45 end up having prostate complications like BPH, Prostatitis, CA Prostate etc. All prostate disorders are painful and medical science (for all practical purposes) can only alleviate the pain and sometimes arrest disease progression. Complete cure is often out of the question.
The two main culprits behind prostate disorders are chemical compounds called 5 alpha-reductase and di-hydrotestosterone. Active ingredients in the willow herb [Two macrocyclic ellagitannins, oenothein A (1) and oenothein B (2)] have been identified as the main constituents responsible for the inhibition of 5-alpha-reductase and aromatase enzymes. Quantitation of oenothein B in 10 different species of Epilobium has shown that amounts of up to 14% in the crude plant extracts are possible. [Ducrey B, Marston A, Gohring S, Hartmann RW, Hostettmann K. 1997. Inhibition of 5 alpha-reductase and aromatase by the ellagitannins oenothein A and oenothein B from Epilobium species. Planta Med 1997 Apr; 63(2): 111-4].
The small flowered willow thus has a significant role to play towards curing a diseased prostate and is also effective in preventing prostate disorders especially Prostatitis and BPH.
The small flowered willow herb really works wonders for the prostate. It may reduce prostate size, inflammation and also improves sexual function.
Today’s patients are not game to seedy advertisements making tall claims about herbal products; they need science backed evidence…so, let’s check out some hard facts.
A German 3 year-study found that taking 160 mg of Small Flowered Willow-herb extract twice daily reduced nighttime urination in 73% of patients and improved urinary flow rates. In a double-blind trial, 160 mg of Small Flowered Willow-herb extract taken twice daily was found to treat BPH as effectively as finasteride (Proscar) without side effects.
Conclusion – Small flowered willow herb works is as good as Proscar, sans the side effects!
16 Patients with a diagnosis of chronic (Category IIIA) prostatitis for at least 6 months underwent comprehensive evaluation including history, microbiologial assessment, quality of life and symptom assessment employing an International Prostatitis Symptom Survey. (IPSS) All patients were treated with 21 days of a natural cocktail derived from a combination of beneficial amino acids, antioxidants, enzymes and minerals produced from the fermentation of rice bran seaweeds and water and Epilobium parviflorum, a full spectrum liquefied Spargycic extraction.
Results: Microscopic evaluation of semen samples revealed evidence of infectious processes as determined by increased white blood cell (WBC) counts. Before application of the liquid cocktail, WBC concentration ranged from a low value of 2 WBC viewed per high power field (hpf) to a high value of 12 WBC/hpf. The values of WBC counts decreased in all cases with a low value of 0.5 WBC/hpf to a high value of 5 WBC/hpf.
The small flowered willow herb works wonders in Prostatitis and significantly boosts sexual function.
